imageKHARTOUM: Sudan President Omar al-Bashir underwent his second knee operation in three months on Monday, official media said, adding to concerns about his health ahead of elections announced for next year.

"The president of the republic had surgery on his left knee," the state SUNA news agency quoted Emad Sayed Ahmed, the presidential press secretary, as saying.

The same Sudanese medical team which performed surgery on his right knee at Royal Care Hospital in May carried out the latest successful operation, SUNA said, adding that Bashir will need time to recover.

Royal Care is Khartoum's best hospital. In 2012 Bashir underwent two other surgeries, which his office described as minor.

Bashir, 70, is wanted by the International Criminal Court for alleged war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide in Sudan's Darfur region.

He took power 25 years ago in an Islamist-backed coup. Last week Sudan's National Election Commission confirmed that a presidential election will take place April 2, 2015.

Whether Bashir will seek a new term hinges on an October convention of the president's ruling party, his chief assistant Ibrahim Ghandour said in a March interview.

"He declared many times that he's not willing to, but the decision will still be with the convention," Ghandour said.
