Indian tennis star Sania Mirza has been named as the ‘UN women’s Goodwill Ambassador’ and became the first female to be chosen as a Goodwill Ambassador from South Asian region. She joined a campaign to end violence against women and girls, and also raise awareness on gender equality.
According to media reports the tennis star said, “It was an honor to serve UN Women as the Goodwill Ambassador for South Asia. My role is a very important battle that I will fight off the tennis court for gender equality. Gender Equality is what I believe in”.
“We need a cultural change and I hope media takes the responsibility, too. Media has the biggest voice, they can and should make a difference”, she added.
UN Assistant Secretary-General and Deputy Executive Director Lakshmi Puri said in a statement, “Sania Mirza has been a role model for girls in India and all over the world. We are pleased and honoured to have such a dynamic woman as our Goodwill Ambassador for South”, media reported.
Earlier this year, UN Women has appointed numerous celebrities including British actor Emma Watson, Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman, Princess Bajrakitiyabha Mahidol of Thailand and Indian actor-filmmaker-singer Farhan Akhtar.
