imageLegendary singer Malika-e-Tarannum Noor Jahan remembered on her death anniversary today on December 23, 2014.

Noor Jahan was the one of the greatest and most influential singers of her time in South Asia. Noor Jahan was the adopted stage name for Allah Wasai. Noor Jahan was pushed by her parents to follow in their musical footsteps and title of ‘Malika-e-Tarannum’ for a career spanning seven decades.

After the creation of Pakistan in 1947, Noor Jahan decided to move to Pakistan along with her husband Shaukat Hussain Rizvi. She left Bombay and settled in Karachi with her family.

Madam Noor Jahan was born on September 21, 1926 in Kasur, She is considered to be the greatest film and music personality of all time, Madam Noor Jahan started her film career at the young age of nine and soon became a renowned child artist. Madam Noor Jahan was more interested in acting in films and graced the earliest Pakistani films with her performances. Madam ruled the film industry for more than 35 years and sung appropriately six thousand songs for Urdu, Punjabi and Sindhi films.

She holds a Remarkable Record of 10,000 songs to her singing credits in various languages of India and Pakistan including Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi and Sindhi. She received many awards, including the highest Pakistani honour in entertainment, ‘Tamgha-e-Imtiaz’ (The Pride of Performance) in 1966, Pakistan’s top civil award.

In 2000, Jahan was hospitalised in Karachi suffering from heart attack. On December 23, 2000 Noor Jahan breathed her last, as a result of heart failure. She will remain in the heart of every Pakistani for many years to come.
