imageAfter law enforcement agencies imposed a ban on cafes serving flavored Shisha, the Defence Housing Authority (DHA) on Friday destroyed around 800 shisha or glass hookahs seized from different shisha parlours.

According to local media reports, at the Defence Authority Country and Golf Club, a road roller rammed into the hookahs, the crushing sound of glass echoing in the open, and a pile of tobacco and powder was burnt, the sweet smell hanging in the air. Many hookahs were manually crushed, an officer taking one hookah and using it to destroy the others.

These hookahs were found in the recent raid on different cafes and parlours in Zamzama and Defence areas.

“The DHA took this initiative after the Supreme Court’s ban on shisha-smoking. We wanted to implement the order to cleanse DHA of this mess. Shisha-smoking is not something new and there are quite a few influential people behind it who are opposing our resolve and clean-up operation here but we are also adamant. We are not going to let this bad habit ruin our young generation,” said DHA Administrator Brig Zubair Ahmed at the destruction ceremony, local media reported.

Shisha culture has become quite popular in Karachi with various eateries offering flavored smoke to the people even after several bans by Supreme Court. This bad habit has been adopted by the new generation as school and college going students were often been spotted at such places.
