TOKYO: Tokyo stocks opened sharply higher on a weaker yen Wednesday following gains on Wall Street, ahead of the outcome of a Federal Reserve meeting expected to result in a long-awaited interest rate rise.
The benchmark Nikkei 225 index at the Tokyo Stock Exchange rose 1.63 percent, or 302.30 points, to 18,868.20 in opening deals, while the broader Topix index of all first-section shares gained 1.54 percent, or 23.20 points, to 1,525.75.
