KARACHI: The General Secretary, Pakistan People's Party (PPP - Sindh), Senator Taj Haider has suggested efficient usage of NADRA database instead of door to door population census.
The senior politician taking exception to proposed methodology of "door to door count" for the next population census in the country, against an hefty expenditure, said there is every possibility of this being hijacked by militant groups.
"On the contrary there is in place a very reliable population data in the shape of NADRA data," said Senator Taj Haider enquiring the logic of massive spending for, what he said, a misguiding method that has failed again and again.
Senator Taj Haider reiterated that the obsolete door to door count methodology has always been hijacked by militant groups who manipulate the figures to their own advantage.
NADRA data is the accurate base which is used in making electoral rolls, BISP and so many other relief programs and the nationwide poverty survey, said the PPP General Secretary for Sindh.
He also mentioned that the "poverty survey" based on NADRA data included 48 questions, providing much more information about households than is collected in a "Census".
The seasoned politician said rigging in national elections was promoted because the constituencies were delimitated on the faulty Census of 1998 done via "door to door count" method while the voters' list was prepared on the basis of NADRA data.
"There should be a single, scientific and reliable database on which all the provincial and national programs should be built," he. said.
Senator Taj Haider suggested that efforts should be made for improving NADRA data in a scientific manner in order to include the small percentage that is not covered yet and the economic migration factor in the "present address" column, rather than repeating a failed experiment of "door to door count" once again.
Senator Taj Haider referred to a population count of the city of Karachi as a sample which was provided to him by NADRA in just 40 minutes 2 years back.
