FRANKFURT: Power plant operators in Germany and Austria are set to increase available capacity by 0.2 percent over the next week, industry data for the wholesale market showed on Friday.
Available capacity is set to rise to 71,255 megawatts (MW in a week's time, from 71,093 MW on Friday, according to operators' current plans, European Energy Exchange (EEX) data showed.
Generators predict demand and adjust supply accordingly because power cannot be stored in large quantities.
Next week will see a demand push by up to 10,000 MW in the big German and French markets due to the arrival of much colder weather, Point Carbon data shows, boosting spot power prices, as supply gains will be evidently modest.
The EEX lists live data from German and most Austrian generators, grid operators and small plants, as well as production forecasts and past production, covering nearly 80,000 MW of installed capacity.
Current plans call for increases in available capacity at coal-fired plants while there will likely be reductions at gas,oil-fired and hydroelectric plants with nuclear broadly stable.
Over the four weeks to Feb. 12, capacity is set to rise by 1 percent compared with Friday, reflecting provisions for the height of the winter heating season.
