ISLAMABAD: Leader of the Opposition in National Assembly Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah, while assuring full support to the government for conducting national census, on Wednesday called for moving ahead the process on merit.
Speaking on a point of order in the National Assembly, he said the census process may not be abandoned, rather it should be carried out on war-footing basis across the country.
Unfortunately, the national census had not been held since 1998, he added.
He said the census was a national task which should not be politicized as country's future planning would ultimately depend on this process.
He pointed out that there had been some reports in the media about specific reservations of provinces with regard to process of the census.
He demanded of the government to take on board the House on this issue of national importance.
Khursheed Shah said army has already been engaged in different areas due to current prevailing situation and operation. "In such circumstance, it will not be possible to spare 375,000 army personnel for conducting the census," he added.
On another issue, he alleged that schools of fashion and design were being closed which had been opened in 2012. Instead of closing, more such schools be set up in other cities, which would ultimately help alleviate poverty, he added.
Shah was also critical of launching of Pakistan Airways company rather than bringing improvement in Pakistan International Airline.
