LAHORE: Federal Minister for Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage Senator Pervaiz Rashid on Friday said that media had contributed a lot for making Pakistan a peaceful and prosperous country which gave the hopes of bright future to the masses.
Speaking at the launch of a national private news channel in Gulberg here, he said that media should support the government in its mission of giving a safe and bright future to the coming generations.
The Minister said that it was all due to a democratic system that Imran Khan and other political leaders had full liberty to hold public meetings to present their agenda.
"The credit of putting questions before the government and demanding answers goes to the democracy which could not be possible under dictatorships which always wanted silence," he added.
To a question regarding PTI public meetings and party songs, he replied that it was the beauty of democracy that any political party had right to portray its culture and manifesto before the people freely.
To a question about Panama Leaks, Pervaiz Rashid said that consensus on the committee for drafting the Terms of Reference (TORs) to probe Panama Papers was a good omen for the nation and democracy.
He said in modern democracies, all decisions were made through consensus while dictatorships just issued orders to obey. He said Parliament represented the whole Pakistan and the TORs committee comprised members from all political parties which would represent the will of the people.
The Information Minister said masses could better hold the government accountable as they could judge the performance, honesty and integrity of the rulers.
Earlier, the Minister launched the channel News 7.
Chairman 7 News Channel Syed Umar Nazar Shah, Vice Chancellor GC University Lahore Prof Dr Hassan Ameer Shah, Punjab Assembly Opposition Leader Mian Mehmood ur Rashid, PML-N MPA and Parliamentary Secretary Rana Muhammad Arshad, PML-Q MPA Amina Ulfat and other celebrities from various walks of life were present.
