An inaugural ceremony of the "Dr Panjwani Center for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research" (PCMD) is expected to be held next month.
The Panjwani Center for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research is founded through a generous support and patronage of Ms Nadira Panjwani in the memory of her beloved father Dr Mohammad Hussain Panjwani, a leading scholar, and philanthropist.
The entire covered area of the PCMD consists of 30,000 square feet in what the 15 laboratories are ornamented by modern and sophisticated scientific instruments, and an Animal House with the capacity of 10 animal rooms is also established.
Professor Dr Iqbal Choudhray, Director (Acting) of HEJ Research Institute of Chemistry, University of Karachi, speaking to foreign delegations said, "the molecular medicine is an emerging new field, which deals with the understanding of the molecular basis of diseases and then developing appropriate strategies for their early diagnosis, management and elimination."
He said: "Knowledge of human biology and disease mechanism at the molecular level is the most important step in developing effective disease prevention and treatment."
He said that the main objective of the Center was to train highly qualified manpower in the emerging new fields of molecular medicine and drug development. "The academicians, clinicians and pharmaceutical researchers would be brought together to translate basic scientific tests," he added.
Dr Iqbal Choudhray said that this new Center, as an integral part of the International Center for Chemical Sciences (ICCS), would work closely with the HE Research Institute of Chemistry and share human, instrumentation and information resources.-PR
