Fears grew in Albania on Sunday that the death toll in the illegal immigrant boat disaster in which 21 people died would rise still further, as the country prepared for a day of mourning to mark the tragedy.
The Albanian authorities said that at least seven people were still unaccounted for as the families of victims milled around the hospital here desperately awaiting news of missing relatives.
"Many families have been unable to find their loved ones either among the survivors at the hospital or the morgue," said a doctor at Vlora hospital, where those rescued are receiving treatment.
"Those missing include three women and four young men," said Pjerin Grishaj, 50, fighting back the tears. His son, accompanied by his young wife, had left Albania "in the hope of a better life."
