"Five more of our scientists were picked up."
"By who?"
"By our intelligence agency."
"Which one?"
"Don't know."
"Can't you hazard a guess?"
"No, I can't. I mean in the US you can be sure of one of the two agencies, right, FBI or CIA. In the UK you have MI5 or MI6. But in Pakistan we have too many intelligence agencies.
The most feared..well, OK, let me rephrase that our most blamed agency is the ISI. Then we have an establishment agency, which not so surreptitiously does surveillance work. And then there is a CID."
"I would imagine the CID probably lacks funds. I think ISI maybe a good bet."
"Anyway, you didn't even ask me who were picked up."
"I know who. Five more staff working for the Khan Research Laboratories, praised by our entire country for making the Bomb were picked up, including Dr Qadeer Khan's secretary."
"I hope we have learned a lesson from all this."
"Sure. You can't hide anything from the American intelligence even if you could get away with it as far as our own intelligence agencies are concerned. I assume of course that had our intelligence, known about the nuclear technology transfers they would have stopped it."
"But what about September 11 - that was hidden from the American intelligence, wasn't it? Then what about the weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, or the lack thereof? What about the.."
"These are political issues, not matters for the intelligence agencies."
"September 11 was a matter for the intelligence agencies."
"Well, the conspiracy theorists say that September 11 gave the US an excuse to attack Iraq and Afghanistan or shall we say it gave the neo-conservatives of the Bush administration an excuse to carry out their master plan to get to the source of cheap oil."
"Ah well, I can believe that of Iraq war but not September 11."
"Anyway the actual lesson learned is do not idolize a bureaucrat, Dr Qadeer should have been left nameless."
"It was Mian Sahib's fault."
"Yes it was. Mian Sahib believed in the Mughal style of leadership. But what about now! Aren't we praising some above others now."
"No we aren't...we praise ourselves."
"If you are referring to the President's maiden speech to parliament then what did you expect him to say..sorry about all the bad things that have happened during my rule, suicide bombers have come to Pakistan, the borders with Afghanistan are not safe, the inflation rate is up, the US interference is up.."
"No of course not..But you know the surprising thing about that speech! He and his team requested the parliamentarians, Nawalas and Jiyalas, to cool down with catcalls during his speech and you know the surprising thing? Some of the fiery ones did listen..I wonder what the government has over them."
"Whatever it is no one will tell...it will come in useful to make them do other things..who knows maybe another splinter Nawala or Jiyala group is ready to join the PML (Lotas)."
"Who knows, indeed?"
