Notices were issued to cigarette manufacturing association and 11 leading manufacturers of cigarettes by a Division Bench of High Court of Sindh (SHC), comprising Justice Ghulam Nabi Soomro and Justice Azizullah M. Memon.
Earlier, the petitioner Haji Gul Ahmed, appearing in person submitted before the court that although warning is printed on all packs, consumption by youth in particular is being encouraged which is injurious for health of millions.
The bench after initial hearing issued notices to respondents for a date to be fixed later by office of the court.
The same bench also commuted death sentence into life imprisonment (LI) awarded to an appellant/convict Haji Khan.
The appellant was sentenced to death by an Anti Terrorism Court for Karachi division on charge of killing one Deen Mohammed who resisted car snatching bid by the accused/appellant in Gulistan-e-Johar on 18-6-1999.
