At least 11 elderly residents were feared to have died in a fire at a care home in Scotland on Saturday, a fire service spokesman said.
Strathclyde Fire Brigade was called to the fire at the Rosepark nursing home in Uddingston near Glasgow shortly before 5am.
Forty fire-fighters extinguished the blaze but a fire brigade spokesman said there was a large number of fatalities because the fire had been very intense.
"The fire was well alight when the firefighters arrived," he said. "Eleven people, believed to be residents, are feared to have died."
At least 40 people were in the privately-owned, two-story home when the fire broke out, he said.
There was no immediate word on the cause of the fire.
A spokesman for the ambulance service said its crews had dealt with 10 people who had died at the scene, and taken seven people who suffered from severe smoke inhalation to hospital. Several of the injured were in a critical condition.
Rosepark has 43 rooms and provides short-stay and long-stay services, as well as care for terminally ill residents and people with mental health problems.
