PhD scholarships sponsored by Ministry of Science and Technology and Higher Education Commission (HEC) would not only provide a strong scientific base but would also help in updating education in accordance with the international standards.
This was stated by Dr Riaz Hussain Qureshi, vice-chancellor, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad (UAF), while addressing members of the supervisory committee of PhD scholarships program of HEC here on Friday.
He said that the UAF has the singular privilege to produce maximum PhDs in Pakistan and this program would help maintain its lead.
He urged the Supervisors to guide the PhD scholars with ultimate objective to facilitate them in completing their research in a most conducive environment. He said that this University has been dealing with agriculture, which is the mainstay of national economy and certainly research in this sector would have salutary impact not only on agriculture but also on the economy.
He paid tributes to the contribution of Dr Atta-ur-Rehman for the promotion of science in Pakistan. He said that for the first time in the history of Pakistan large funds have been pumped into this sector for arranging thousands of PhD scholarships.
Earlier, Professor Dr Sohail H Naqvi, Member, Human Resource Development Strategy and Planning at HEC, explained the salient features of PhD scholarships program initiated by HEC.
He said that huge financial allocation has removed most of the difficulties being confronted by the PhD scholars and added that 1000 scholars would be sent abroad to improve their scholastic abilities in addition to completing their PhD theses.
Talat Khursheed, Director, Planning, HEC, said that a monitoring committee has been set up to remove apprehensions about PhD program in various universities.
