A US soldier was killed and another injured Tuesday when a home-made bomb exploded south of Baghdad as a patrol was sweeping the area for booby traps, a US military spokesman said.
"There was one soldier killed and another injured at approximately 10:30 am (0730 GMT) by an IED (improvised explosive device) attack near Hazwa, in the vicinity of Iskandariyah," said the spokesman.
The soldiers belonged to the 82nd Airborne Division and were on a "counter-IED operation" when the attack occurred 50 kilometres (31 miles) south of the capital.
