Veteran politicians, former judges, local journalists, former and present student leaders and NGO representatives at a seminar on Monday called upon students to continue their "Constitutional" struggle for lifting of ban clamped on student unions besides creating awareness among masses regarding importance of students' role in a healthy society.
The seminar on "Student Unions: 20 years of ban" was organised by Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) here at a local hotel and people from all walks of life including politicians, lawyers, former judges, journalists, representatives of NGOs and former and present student leaders spoke on the occasion.
Former chief justice of Sindh High Court Justice Nasir Aslam Zahid said if Supreme Court of Pakistan had declared ban imposed on student unions "unconstitutional and unjust", anybody can approach high courts or even the Supreme court requesting immediate implementation of its decision.
Former justice stated that any male or female student or student organisation should file a writ petition in the any of the high courts or in the Supreme Court through an intelligent lawyer against the ban and present the situation at educational institutions prior to ban and after it.
He asked students to continue pressurising the governments through media, by holding seminars and organising rallies in favour of their demands and adding that civil society's pressure has the tendency to compel the government to mend its ways.
Naib Amir Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) and Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) leader Senator Professor Ghafoor Ahmed held army generals responsible for every problem confronting nowadays and said ban on student unions was brainchild of a military dictator.
Veteran politician Meraj Muhammad Khan recalled the history of student movements for revival of democracy and basic civil and human rights in the county and said it were students who struggled for creation of Pakistan on directives of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
Sajjad Mir, resident editor of a local Urdu daily, termed the holding of seminar for revival of student unions as useless and said unless people of the country get rid of prevailing system, nothing will change.
