CSCE raw sugar futures ended mostly higher Tuesday on trade buying and switch activity although market players feel poor fundamentals will eventually drag the sweetener lower in the days ahead, brokers said.
CSCE March sugar increased 0.08 cent to finish at 5.44 cents a lb, trading between 5.37 cents and 5.50 cents. May rose 0.06 cent to 5.73 cents. The rest ranged from 0.02 cent easier to 0.02 cent firmer.
Futures mounted a brief probe of areas near the contract low in March of 5.34 cents during early dealings but rebounded as trade buying emerged, brokers said.
Open interest in March dove 6,297 lots to 117,651 lots as of February 9 while interest in May rose 6,816 to 64,588 lots.
Technically, analysts said, support in the March sugar contract was at 5.31, the 5.26 level and in layers down to 5.00 cents. Resistance would be at 5.50, followed by the region of 5.54/57 cents.
Final estimated volume reached 51,382 lots, up from the previous 50,419 lots. Call volume was 4,138 lots and puts stood at 3,256 lots. Open interest in the No 11 sugar market rose 653 lots to 267,474 lots as of February 9.
