The consumption of fish at 1.6 kilogram per capita in Pakistan is very low as compared to 24-kg in Japan, 20-kg in Europe, USA, Germany, UK and France.
Punjab Fisheries Director-General Dr Mohammad Ayub, who is also a leading fisheries scientist, told APP here on Sunday that in Pakistan fish consumption is particularly very low in Punjab and NWFP where it is less than 250-gram, adding it rises to 5-kg in Sindh and 15-kg in Balochistan.
About 70 percent fish caught in Pakistan is consumed locally, while remaining fish is sold in the local market or exported, he said.
Dr Ayub said Pakistan exports fish and fish products to more than 39 countries of which Japan is the main market, adding shrimp is the main item imported by Japan, USA, West Germany, UK and France.
