Sixty-five Maoists fighting to overthrow Nepal's monarchy were reported killed after troops seized a guerrilla training camp as a rebel strike shut down the capital Kathmandu.
Troops took control of the Maoist base in Kalikot district, 360 kilometre's (225 miles) west of Kathmandu, and recovered the bodies of 65 rebels killed in fierce fighting that erupted Sunday morning, a security official said.
He said 200 reinforcements were flown in Tuesday, bringing to 500 the number of troops searching for more bodies and for weapons at the jungle camp, which had been pounded by army attack helicopters.
One soldier was killed and four others injured in the clash, state radio said Tuesday. The radio had earlier said 35 Maoists died in the fighting as of Monday.
The death toll was impossible to verify independently because of the remote location of the fighting.
