United Arab Emirates (UAE) President Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahyan is paying for repairs to Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa Mosque, which sustained some damage during an earthquake earlier this month, the official WAM news agency reported Sunday.
The dome of the mosque was left with cracks in its structure after a medium to strong earthquake on February 11, which shook several Middle Eastern countries, WAM said.
Sheikh Zayed is to fund the repairs, it added, without giving details on the estimated cost.
The UAE Red Crescent Society has been directed "to quickly implement the president's order by co-ordinating with the appropriate" authorities.
The mosque is the third holiest site in Islam and was built on the site of the second Jewish temple, the holiest shrine in Judaism, which was destroyed by the Romans more than 600 years before.
