The Governor, State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), Dr Ishrat Hussain, on Tuesday visited the community development projects in Thatta district, which are initiated by the National Commission for Human Development (NCHD). He was accompanied by the NCHD Chairman, Dr Nasim Ashraf.
The SBP Governor, speaking at the community meeting at Sakro Tehsil of district Thatta, called upon the people, philanthropists and the non-governmental organisations (NGOs) especially local NGOs, to co-ordinate their efforts for the community's socio-economic uplift as the government alone could do little.
He expressed satisfaction over the progress of the NCHD projects to promote literacy and health awareness and the forward-looking attitude of the local people.
He noted that Thatta was the least developed district of Sindh and through the government and public participation, more development activities were needed.
He assured all possible support to the communities development activities in the district.
Responding to local demand, the SBP Governor said he would work on the opening of Khushali Bank branch in Thatta to encourage minor entrepreneurs.
Earlier, the Governor was given presentation on the NCHD activities and its future projects before he visited adult literacy centre and schools.
Dr Nasim Ashraf said the NCHD meant to bridge gap between people and the government prefects.
He said the NCHD had done good job, and added more than 50,000 out school children had been enrolled and campaign would be launched to increase their enrolment. More adult centres would also be set up soon, he added.
Dr Nasim Ashraf said that President Pervez Musharraf saw education as number one national item to be focused, and added the NCHD's main role was to ensure implementation of provincial and Federal governments' polices even in remote areas.
Amongst others, Advisor to Sindh Chief Minister on Community Development, Faqir Khadem Hussain Mangrio, Naib Zila Nazim and former federal minister Shehnaz Wazir Ali and District Co-ordination Officer (DCO), Thatta, Mohammad Usman were presents.
