Pakistan Crop Protection Association (PCPA), while expressing its grave concern over suspension of process of issuance of registration for the import of pesticides, has asked the government to take immediate steps to restore and streamline the registration process.
Any delay towards restoration of process of registration for pesticides import may cause serious repercussions for the coming rice/cotton crops, said Ijaz Ahmad Ch, Central Chairman PCPA, while talking to Business Recorder here on Friday.
"In order to ensure availability of pesticide in sufficient quantity for the forthcoming crops, and also to eliminate the exploitation and monopoly of a few companies, registration of new companies for the import of pesticide is need of the hour," he opined.
At present, cases of more than 140 companies, which have applied for registration to import pesticide, are pending with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, he said.
Ijaz claimed that the Ministry of Food and Agriculture has issued SRO under which the process of registration of the import of pesticide has been stopped.
He was of the view that this action is aimed at creating monopoly of some particular companies in pesticide trade. In order to ensure level playing field for the industry, it is necessary to revive the registration process so the import of pesticide could be continued in a competitive environment.
Chairman PCPA has also written a letter to Federal Minister for Food and Agriculture Sardar Yar Muhammad Rind, Secretary, Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock (Minfal) and Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister of Pakistan and apprised them situation emerging after stopping registration process.
