President General Pervez Musharraf has stressed the need to make Pakistan a moderate and enlightened country where every one has equal opportunities to lead his life in the light of Islamic traditions.
In his message on Ashura, Musharraf said the day holds great significance and reverence as the dearest grandson of the Holy Prophet (Peace be upon him) along with his companions laid down their lives for the glory of Islam.
The day, the President said, holds a special significance in view of the principles established by Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) to uphold truth and point way to the path of righteousness.
He said that on this day Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) established certain principles, which are now treated as foundations for the humanity. The success of any ideology and thought depends on these very standards.
He said, "let us pledge to turn Pakistan into a enlightened and moderate Islamic state, which conforms to the modern times and provides an opportunity for all to live on the basis of equality and justice in accordance with the teachings of Islam."
Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali has called upon the nation to adopt the true spirit of sacrifice rendered by Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions at Karbala and prepare for the challenges Islam is facing today.
In a message on Ashura, the Prime Minister said, "Islam teaches us the qualities of tolerance, sacrifice and righteousness in our every day life."
He urged the people to shun the negative tendencies of extremism, intolerance, sectarianism and provincialism, and to focus on the true spirit of Islam.
He said: "The need of the hour is to stand steadfast in face of the forces of evil and let no harm come to our great religion of Islam."
"The religion Islam", he said, "guides us on to the path of service to humanity, tolerance, unity, brotherhood and justice."
He said it was his belief that these were the foundations on which the great Islamic civilisation was based.
He said: "Even today if we want to live as a respectable and self-sufficient nation we will have to stick to these noble principles."
The tenth of Muharram, he said, has a great significance in history. Holy Prophet Mohammad (Peace be Upon Him) and his companions used to fast this day. The Holy Prophet's (PBUH) grandson Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his associates laid down their lives for the glory of Islam at Karbala.
"This supreme sacrifice will always stand for what is right and what is true has become a cherished standard for all the followers of this great religion."
PUNJAB GOVERNOR: Lieutenant General Khalid Maqbool (Retd), Punjab Governor, has said that the best way to commemorate the historic sacrifices of Karbala martyrs is to forge unity and to rise above sectarianism and parochial sentiments, holding fast to the principles of brotherhood, tolerance, peace and mutual respect.
In his message on the eve of Yaum-e-Ashur, Khalid said that the events at Karbala were undoubtedly a significant and glorious chapter of the Muslim history, which could never be forgotten.
The Governor said that Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his dedicated companions taught the whole world in general and the Muslims in particular to face the ordeal of life with stoic resistance, forthrightness and extreme determination.
He said that by refusing heroically to bow down before the forces of evil, Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) glorified the Islam forever.
He said every year they paid their respect and reverence to the Imam, who taught them the spirit of sacrifice for the collective welfare of the Ummah.
He said that today they again needed the same spirit of self-sacrifice, determination and courage to face all kinds of perils with the realisation that the evil could never defeat the good.
Khalid said that the sacred memory of the Imam was part and parcel of their glorious heritage, which would continue to reverberate and inspire the generations to come.
SINDH GOVERNOR: Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan, Sindh Governor, has said that the incident of Karbala is a role model for Muslims to fight against evil forces with discipline and patience.
The governor, in a message on the occasion of 'Youm-e-Ashur' here on Monday, said the greatest sacrifice rendered by Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS), his family and other companions was an unmatched example for human being to uphold principles and the truth.
He said this day calls that through unity we should wage a war on all the elements within and outside the country, who were hostile to Islam, integrity of Pakistan, and security of people's life and property.
"The day of Ashur invites Muslims to look into their actions and set them in agreement with "Sunnah and Shariah." Hence, we should renew our commitment that by following the footsteps of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS), we would make every sacrifice for Islam."
NWFP GOVERNOR: Lieutenant General Syed Iftikhar Hussain Shah (Retd), NWFP Governor, has said that Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions laid down their lives at Karbala for the supremacy of Islam.
This sacrifice, he added, is a source of enlightenment of both heart and mind for the followers of righteousness.
In a message issued on the eve of Yaum-e-Ashur, the Governor said that the incidence of Karbala is greatly linked to the wellbeing of entire humanity and the struggle for the establishment of justice-based system.
It also carries the lesson for the entire Muslim Ummah not to lose patience and courage at any hour of test, he added.
The Governor said that centuries have passed but the remembrance of the great sacrifices of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his faithful is still alive in the hearts and minds and will remain so till the dooms day.
In fact, the Governor said, they have set such unparalleled signs of courage, steadfastness and the supremacy of rightfulness, which would not only remain forever but also will also enlighten and recharge the struggle of those who are fighting against oppressions and tyranny.
The incident of Karbala, the Governor said, teaches us the lesson to remain resolute against the evil forces.
The great Imam and his devoted fellows have proved that true Muslim would lay down the heads but never bow it before the false.
Keeping these realities in mind, he added, we must have to follow the footprints of the devotees of Islam for upholding these cherished goals as our deliverance also lies in it.
Today, the Governor said, when we are paying tributes to the martyrs of Karbala, the day demands us to root out sectarianism, keep our ranks and files united and follow the teachings of Imam Hussain (RA), which are practical demonstration of upholding the right and fighting against the false.
In it lies our salvation and this is the only way to pay befitting tributes to those true sons of Islam, he concluded.
