The G.C. University, Faisalabad, has won seven gold medals, four silver medals and three bronze medals in the Inter-Universities Games-2004, held recently and got third position in overall games in which teams of 56 universities participated.
G.C. University Vice Chancellor Dr Asif Iqbal Khan said here on Thursday the GC University teams of athletics, cricket, cycling, cross country, lawn tennis and gymnastic were declared Faisalabad Board champions while the squash, table tennis, Karate and weight-lifting teams attained the runners-up positions in the Board Championships-2004.
Giving the details of medals, Dr Asif Iqbal Khan said the GC University student, Mohammad Nadeem has won gold medal in 400-meter race whereas Umer Hayat won a gold medal in 3,000-meter race.
The gold medal in 10,000-meter race was also won by Umer Hayat, he said, adding Mohammad Shehzad of the GC University won gold medal in 400-meter hurdles while Naveed Ahmad won gold medal in long jump and triple jump, and d Shahid, Irfan, Naveed and Hassan won Gold Medal in 4x100 meter relay race.
The vice-chancellor also said Umer Hayat of GC University was declared 'Best Athelete' in Athletic Championship with two gold and one silver medals and got fourth position in javelin throw and fifth position in 1,500 meter race by securing 24 points, adding three players of the GC University athletic team, Fahmeed, Umer Hayat and Shehzad also won the silver medals while Shehzad, Nadeem, Waqas, Rehan and Rashid won bronze medals in 4x400 meter relay, 5,000-meter race and hammer throw, respectively.
The vice-chancellor said the GC University also lifted trophies in the Faisalabad Board Inter-Collegiate Championship in athletics, cricket, cross county, cycling, gymnastic and lawn tennis while its squash, table tennis, Karate and weight-lifting teams remained runners-up in the championship. Mohammad Nadeem of second year of the GC University was declared the 'Best Athelete' of the year, he added.
The vice-chancellor attributed the credit for the success of GC University teams in the Inter-Universities and Inter-Collegiate Championship to Attiq-ur-Rehman Khan, chairman, Sports Board and Mirza Abid Hussain Baig, Director Sports, GC University who took keen interest in proper training of various teams of the University through efficient coaching.
