International Consumer Day was observed here on Sunday like other parts of the world. NGOs Health Development Network and Multan Crescent Lions Club organised a seminar on "Consumers and their rights".
The speakers Dr Javed Siddiqui, MPA, Rana Muhammad Akram Khan EDO (Community Development, Chaudhry Nazir Ahmed (EDO Education), Colonel Tabassum-Ussaqib Butt (Retd), Technical Advisor to Town Municipal Administration (TMA), Chaudhry Shamim Ahmed Director WASA, Waseem Mumtaz, President District Bar, Dr Rana Aftab Khan DDO (Health),Shehzad Anwar Shaikh and Dr Irfan Paracha said that we would have to organise consumer resistance committees to foil the nefarious designs of the hoarders, profiteers, looters, adulterators.
They said that with the commencement of Local self-government at District and Union Council level, there is no system to check the price control and no one is ready to accept ones responsibility.
Dr Javed Siddiqui MPA said that prices of essential commodities had gone beyond the reach of common man while their daily income fallen to less than one dollar. Present regime failed to provide any relief to the consumers.
He further said that principle of demand and supply do not apply in Pakistan. Because cartel of traders fix the prices of daily use items.
