As many as 61 companies including 16 from Germany, Korea, Taiwan and Japan would participate in the second three-day exhibition 'Plastic Asia 2004' due to start from March 19.
The 'Plastic Asia 2004' is being jointly organised by the Lahore Chamber of Commerce & Industry (LCCI) and Pakistan Plastic Manufacturers Association (PPMA). Federal Minister for Industries & Production Liaquat Ali Jatoi will inaugurate the exhibition.
Addressing a meeting here on Monday, LCCI chief Mian Anjum Nisar said that this event would bring forth the true potential of the plastic sector and prove as a milestone in promoting exhibition and export culture in the country.
Mohammed Ali Mian, Convener of Managing Committee of the exhibition and the former LCCI Vice President, said that the use of plastic products were extremely popular in the world that can be gauged from the fact that the Europe consumes 20 kgs per person and in Malaysia and Korea it stands at 10 kgs per person.
In Pakistan, the usage of plastic products is hovering at mere 2 kgs per person that leaves a lot room for this sector to flourish. He said that high input cost which includes 25 percent import duty on raw material was impeding progress of the sector.
The import duty on raw material in China is zero while India has imposed just 5 percent duty.
China also offers rebate on plastic exports. Given the incentives, exports of plastic products from Pakistan can go up to 10 times, he remarked.
PPMA Chairman S M Tariq said that the plastic products were cheap and environment-friendly.
The promotion of the plastic industry would not only create job opportunities but also earn precious foreign exchange.
