Blue chips held onto gains on Tuesday as investors were cheered by an upbeat earnings outlook from manufacturer 3M Co, but advances on Nasdaq were tempered ahead of upcoming results from a Federal Reserve meeting and by persistent security fears.
The Dow Jones industrials were up 60.37 points, or 0.60 percent, at 10,163.26 and the technology-laced Nasdaq Composite Index was up 0.92 point, or 0.05 percent, at 1,940.12. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 4.64 points, or 0.42 percent, at 1,109.13.
