The Japan Foundation in collaboration with Alhamra Arts Council organised 'Japan Kokeshi Dolls Exhibition' in connection with Pak-Japan Friendship Festival 2004 here at Alhamra Arts Gallery.
Kokeshi is emerged out of local life and culture and continue to be made in the Tohoku region according to techniques passed down by generations of craftsmen.
Kokeshi dolls have fixed shapes and patterns that are easily recognised by its particular features.
The craftsmen of creative Kokeshi tend to be based in the outskirts of large cities rather than rural areas. Every peace in the exhibition had a different theme like country girl, flower mist, metropolitan people and many others.
Unique folk dolls are found in every part of Japan, among the most typical are Kokeshi or wooden dolls.
Traditional Tohoku Kokeshi artisans also made wooden toys, kitchen and household items and moving toys using Kokeshi materials and techniques that were displayed in the exhibition. The exhibition will continue till March 25.
