US stocks were near unchanged on Friday as investors weighed security concerns, including a battle between Pakistani troops and rebels that might lead to the capture of a top al Qaeda figure.
The blue chip Dow average was weighed down by shares of defence company United Technologies Corp after a Wall Street analyst said he was uncertain the company's jet engine might not be chosen by Boeing Co for its new 7E7 airplane.
The Dow was down 12 points, or 0.12 percent, at 10,283.78. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 2.35 points, or 0.21 percent, at 1,119.97. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index was up 2.74 points, or 0.14 percent, at 1,965.18.
