At least 20 people were killed in an attack on a village in Nigeria's central highlands, a senior state official told reporters Friday on the eve of tense local elections.
In the early hours of Thursday an armed gang attacked the village of Wase, in a strife-torn district of Plateau State, and 20 people, including two policemen, were killed in the ensuing battle, he said.
Plateau State's police chief, Commissioner Innocent Iluozoke, confirmed that there had been an attack and told AFP that he was on his way to the scene, but could not give any details about what had happened.
Wase's largely Muslim community has in recent years been locked in conflict with the Christian villagers of nearby Tarok and Langtang.
Tension has been building across Nigeria in the run-up to Saturday's local government elections, which many observers fear will be marred by violence.
