Full exploitation of the budding educational institution of Government College University (GCU) Faisalabad is must to provide much needed educated and qualified human resource for the future development and progress of Pakistan, said Governor Punjab Lieutenant General Khalid Maqbool (Retd).
Addressing the first convocation of the GCU Faisalabad here on Tuesday, he said that this budding University that was inaugurated in October 2002 has taken a major stride in the academic field.
He particularly mentioned the introduction of industry-oriented programmes like MBA, textile and fashion design etc and said that a strong bond of co-operation between Faisalabad based industry and University is an encouraging sign and must be consolidated further.
He said that it would not only facilitate provision of funds and other facilities to the University but also go a long way in modernising and updating key areas of industrial growth in Pakistan.
The governor was also appreciative of the achievement of the GCU in the field of sports and athletics and prayed that it would continue to make progress in all levels.
He said that culture of quality would also have a wholesome impact on culture and quality of life in the city of Faisalabad if allowed to take roots.
He said that the Punjab government initiative of reform package for the universities is being persuaded vigorously with the help of the Higher Education Commission.
"Great strides have been made in the areas of curriculum development, faculty improvement and provision of infrastructure inputs", he said and added that it is not up to the faculty of this university to take maximum advantage of the funds and facilities being made available.
"I would like to congratulate the University administration for being able to secure developmental funds for the construction of new blocks not only from the government but also from private sector," he said and hoped that master plan for campus development when completed would not only provide much needed space and environment for the students and faculty but would also be an architectural landmark of the city skyline.
The Governor also exhorted the industrialists to come forward voluntarily for provision of much needed resources to the University. "Growth and progress in university functions will contribute to the growth and development in the industrial sector", he added.
Attracting the attention of the students, Khalid Maqbool urged the graduating students to "Partake fully in the sustained improvement in the living condition of people in order to achieve a more equitable distribution of income and provide relief to the less privileged segments of the society".
He said that increasing number of students has necessitated provision of additional transport, labs and buildings etc facilities and government was fully prepared to play its role in spite of financial constraints.
He said that government has already fulfilled its commitments within a short spell of time and hoped that local industrialists would also continue to contribute for the development of this University.
Congratulating the awardees of degrees, medals and certificates of distinction, the Governor hoped that they would contribute to the prestige of the institution to which they are indebted for their success.
Earlier, the vice chancellor Dr Asif Iqbal Khan in his report said that GCU Faisalabad has achieved academic break through during the last 12 months by focusing on contemporary technology area.
He said that 12 new graduate and postgraduate disciplines in the very first year of its existence have been introduced.
An increase in enrolment of about 1000 more students at the higher education level has continued towards shifting the focus on tuition-generating intermediate classes to post graduate culture in the university.
The VC said that in view of increase enrolment, there is an acute need to shift remaining 800 under graduate students to inter section. "A development grant of Rs 50 million is required to build an intermediate block, he added.
Earlier, the Governor awarded degrees, medals, and roll of honour to the students of the University.
