KHOONNAB
Shafique Ahmed Shafique
"Khoonnab" is a collection of five modern Marsias of Saba Akberabadi, along with analytical studies of renowned critics and writers on each Marsia. It has been compiled by Dr Mushfiq Khwaja, a renowned researcher, critic and poet. A man of multi-dimensional qualities, Saba enjoyed a respectable position among the personage of Urdu literature. Distinguished as a versatile poet, he composed Hamds, Na'ats, Salams, Ghzals, Rubayiaat, Qat'at, Marsias besides engaging in other genres of poetry. For these, he was counted among creative and stylish writers of his times. He was also a good prose writer, with a marked verve in the sphere of sketch-writing. His sketches on Aarzoo Lakhnavi, Josh Malihabadi, Fani Badayouni, Yas Yagana Changaizi, Jigar Muradabadi, Seemab Akbarabadi, Hasrat Muhani and Saghar Nezami have been found worth reading. Mention may also be made here of the excellent job he rendered in translating the Persian Rubayiaat of Irani poet Umer Khayyam into Urdu.
He has also created a niche of his own in modern Marsia-writing. The book under review makes an undeniable evidence of this fact. It may also be pointed out that, in certain respects, he can be bracketed with the founders of Marsia-e-Jadeed (modern Marsia). He has created about 80 modern Marsias. All these pieces have been applauded by the literary critics, poets, writers and readers. The famous poets Josh Malihabadi, Prof Majnoo Gorakhpuri, Ahmed Nadeem Qasimi, Dr Ebadat Barelvi, Dr Farman Fatahpuri, Dr Abul Khair Kashfy, Talibe Jauhari and many others have appreciated the spontaneous creative capacities and deep approaches of thoughtfulness of Saba Akbarabadi, as presented in his Marsias and other poetic genres.
As we know that the tragic event of Karbala is the subject of Marsis in which the poets narrate the incident of martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and almost his whole family members.
The new Marsia also reflects and discusses elaborately the other important social, religious, political and humanitarian issues and problems with new angles and new approaches. There are five modern Marsias on Hijrat (migration), Lafz (word), Khak (dust, earth) Qalb-e-Mutma'in (The satisfied heart), Mimbar (pulpit) in this book. All these subjects have been defined and elaborated with plurality of meanings and angles in "Khoonnab". There are also some impressive and thoughtful "Salams" in this collection too.
Athough the basic poetic structure of Saba Akberabadi is made of healthy and magnificent literary traditions, this poetic structure is filled and decorated by the colours of modern sensitivity, new vocabulary, idioms, metaphor, style and contemporary feelings. Saba had a forceful way of expression in a delicious tone. His study of ancestor poets' works, styles, vocabularies, ways of thinking, angles of experiments, treatments of subject matters is vast, bringing out authenticity in Urdu-poetic world. Undoubtedly, he acquired the enviable status of 'Ustad i.e. an authentic teacher of poetic discipline.
