Pakistan cricket team's former captain and legendary fast bowler Wasim Akram was granted pre-arrest interim bail by the Sindh High Court (SHC) in criminal breach of trust case on Friday.
SHC's single bench comprising Justice Zawar Hussain Jaffery, granting interim bail, ordered applicant to furnish surety in sum of Rs 1,00,000 before Nazir of the court.
The urgent bail application was moved by the Wasim's counsel, Zahid F. Ibrahim after rejection of bail by the trial court.
The trial court on Thursday cancelled his bail observing that non-bailable warrant of the applicant was issued as he failed to appear before the court.
The case was registered against Waseem Akram in Darakshan Police Station, here on November 28, 2002 by his friend Saadat for not returning the complainant jeep.
The defence counsel contended that his client was falsely implicated in the said case, and 1976 model jeep, in question, was given to his client as gift by the complainant in November 1998.
He contended that case was mala fiddely registered only to harass the petitioner after delay of four years. It was also argued that on demand of complainant, the jeep was returned to him, but he refused to receive it.
Wasim's counsel pleaded court to grant bail to his client as case was not made out against him and it was lodged with mala fide intentions.
The court after hearing arguments granted pre-arrest interim bail to Wasim Akram in sum of Rs 1,00,000 and directed him to appear before court on April 21, for confirmation of it. The court also ordered to issue notice to the advocate general Sindh in this regard.
Talking newsmen outside court's room, Wasim said that he was happy as he was granted bail. When asked about case, he said, "it is a tactic only to harass me."
