The National Assembly was informed on Monday that the government was revising the IRO-2002 to remove certain reservations expressed by the International Labour Organisation and the trade unions.
Parliamentary Secretary for Labour, Manpower and Overseas Pakistanis, Rana Omar told the House that the ministry in consultations with all the stakeholders, including workers, employees, provincial labour departments was actively considering a few revisions in the IRO.
He said that ILO had expressed some reservations about the Industrial Relations Organisation (IRO) vis-à-vis its conventions on freedom of association and rights to organise collective bargaining etc.
The secretary added that the amendments would soon be brought on the floor of the House.
To a question, he maintained that the IRO-2002 was not repugnant to fundamental rights.
He noted that it was not true that all the labour organisations had opposed the IRO. However, some of them opposed some provisions and demanded their removal from the ordinance.
During the question hour, Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunications, Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari said that the satellite phone policy was ready and would be made public during this week.
"The policy has been formulated to provide phone access to the residents of far-flung areas where other means of telecommunications were not economically feasible," the minister explained.
He was responding to a volley of questions by Anwar Ali Cheema, Farid Ahmed Paracha and other members. The minister said that the ministry was working on a strategy to lower further the rates of phone calls on all the three categories.
Leghari said that soon a decision would be taken about the daily wagers working with the PTCL for over three years. However, despite Liaquat Baloch insistence, he declined to give any specific date for the decision.
The Minister agreed with a questioner that some retired officers were re-employed in the last three years for the accomplishment of special assignments of the company.
The minister dismissed a claim by MMA MNA Liaquat Baloch that he (Leghari) had made a commitment on the floor of the House that the services of the daily wagers would be regularised by March 31.
However, the Speaker Chaudhry Amir Hussain did not allow the member for his viewpoint about the commitment.
