Afaq Ahmed, Chairman of Mohajir Qaumi Movement (Haqiqi) was remanded in the custody of police till April 10 in a murder case of an activist Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) by Judicial Magistrate East, Pervez-ul-Qadir Memon.
Earlier the accused was brought to the city courts complex at 01:35 pm in an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) escorted by a heavy police contingent in more than a dozen police vehicles.
The accused was produced before the court with covered face and hands tied on the back.
According to remand papers submitted by the police, accused was booked in murder of one Farooq on June 19, 1992, the day when Afaq made a breakaway faction of MQM and operation clean up was under taken against MQM, now Muttahida.
The accused accompanied by other co-accused including General Secretary Aamir Khan and one Zubair allegedly gunned down Farooq and abducted 12 other workers of MQM.
When the judge inquired from the accused about any maltreatment while in custody, Afaq Ahmed complained that he was a victim of bad attitude of police. He was not provided a bed at CIA centre Sadder, where he was detained.
He also requested to the court to hand him over to Pakistan Rangers instead of police as he apprehended danger to his life.
He said that he was brought to the court in an insulting manner.
The judicial magistrate taking notice of complaint by accused ordered that his face should not be covered when he was brought to the court and that handcuff placed on one hand are enough.
Unprecedented protest by women was witnessed when Afaq Ahmed was being taken back. Women clad in veils (burqas) stopped police vehicles for at least 15 minutes and chanted slogans against political rivals.
