Sakip Sabanci, chairman of one of Turkey's largest conglomerates, the Sabanci Group, died early on Saturday in hospital of complications resulting from influenza, Anatolia news agency reported.
Sabanci, in hospital since March 30, suffered damage to his liver and kidneys from the influenza, following kidney surgery last year, Anatolia quoted his doctors as saying.
Sabanci was born in the central Anatolian city of Kayseri in 1933, the second son of a cotton worker.
He became treasurer, then manager, of a factory, and became chairman of Sabanci Holding, the parent company of the Sabanci Group, in 1966.
In 2002, Sabanci Holding reported consolidated revenue of $5.2 billion and pre-tax income of $562 million. Sabanci was married with three children.
