A politician from India's main opposition Congress party was injured Sunday in a car crash in Chattisgarh state, which he led until Hindu nationalists ousted him from office in December, officials said.
The car of Ajit Jogi, who is contesting elections to the Indian parliament, crashed into a tree in the central state's Gariabandh area, the Press Trust of India said.
Jogi, who was suspended from Congress in December but reinstated into the party three months later, suffered severe head and spinal injuries, officials said.
Jogi's government lost power in Chattisgarh in elections held December 1 and was soon suspended when political foes accused him of trying to bribe rival Hindu nationalist lawmakers in a bid to retain his legislative majority in the mountainous state.
Congress president Sonia Gandhi pardoned Jogi and revoked the suspension March 30 when the politician apologised for his unspecified "lapses."
