Construction work on long awaited Kurram Tangi Dam will be started on August 14, 2004. President General Pervez Musharraf is expected to inaugurate this mega project in district Lakki Marwat. It will be completed in four years period with estimated cost of Rs 12 billions.
It was formally sanctioned and announced by President General Pervez Musharraf on special request of Humayun Saifullah Khan, District Nazim Lakki Marwat, in special meeting of District Nazims at Bannu.
The dam after completion will cater irrigation requirements of 362,500 acres of barren but fertile land in southern districts besides producing additional 63-megawatt electricity.
The dam is being constructed at Zarwam area, 32 km north of Bannu at Kurram River and its catchment areas included vast lands of Bannu, Lakki Marwat, Karak and North Waziristan Agency with its water reservoir at Shewa.
The project also envisaged construction of bunds along Kaitu River in Spinwam area in order to divert floodwater to the dam in case of any emergency and floods in Kaitu River.
Construction of KTD is long standing demand of the farming community of southern districts wherein Humayun Saifullah Khan played pivotal role in his various capacities to realise this dream of green revolution in the area.
However, the past regimes did not pay heed to this demand and put paper works and requests of Humayun Saifullah in cold storage.
The people especially majority farming community of southern districts have welcomed initiation of practical work on KTD with desires to complete its consultancy schemes as soon as possible to pave way for its ground breaking work well in time.
They were of the opinion that construction of the dam will give rapid boost to agriculture produce besides increasing job opportunities in the region.
They also showed gratitude to the President General Musharraf, NWFP government and District Nazim Humayun Saifullah in this respect.
