Use of unhygienic plastic containers for carriage of milk is a dangerous trend, and the government should take appropriate and immediate steps to save the people from the hazards of horrible effects of Blue Drums.
This was stated by Muhammad Azhar Zaman, Chief Executive of Zam Zam Farm Fresh Milk, here on Sunday while talking to Business Recorder.
He said that thousands of litres fresh milk is being carried by different people in unhygienic plastic containers, particularly blue containers which are in fact used for carrying strong chemicals. "What happens with the fresh milk after keeping in these drums for carrying for many hours. One can assess as government is still silent on this issue," he said.
There is dire need of a vigil on transportation of milk in order to discourage people involved in the ugly business of adulteration and use of unhygienic plastic drums, he said. Although the Punjab government has imposed complete ban on use of these drums in carriage and storage of edibles, but it has no impact and these drums are being used regularly, Azhar said.
He said that these drums are cheap and easy to carry, but as far as human life is concerned these harmful drums should not be allowed.
He said that during these days of price hike, when people have no approach to meat, beef, fish and other proteins, they are using milk as substitute. "But when this will also be harmful for them what will happen to this nation?" Azhar asked. He said that more than 33 million tons milk is being produced in Pakistan out of which 27 million tons is consumed by masses while the remaining 6 million goes to waste.
Azhar, a former military man and now a dairy farmer, said that Rawalpindi Islamabad is a profitable market for milk sellers as 80 percent of the total milk consumed in these two cities is provided by rural areas of Punjab including Sargodha, Faisalabad, Mandi Bahauddin and Gujrat. Fifty percent milk is supplied to houses while remaining 50 percent is utilised for commercial purposes.
He said that the milkmen delivering milk in houses individually are also committing heinous crime of adulteration like mixing filthy water and powder for thickening and supplying the milk of ill animals. "This milk, in spite of being beneficial, is becoming a curse for the people as it causes many diseases," he said.
He stressed that the government should patronise the dairy farmers and provide soft loans for dairy farming and regulate this industry in order to make it beneficial for the masses.
About his involvement in dairy business he said that with sole spirit of serving humanity he has entered this business.
