Two American police officers and a Jordanian were killed in a shootout in Kosovo, apparently during a row over Iraq, in what the UN Sunday called a reckless attack on its personnel in the Serbian province.
A Jordanian officer fired on a convoy of three vehicles with mostly US prison officers on their way out of a prison in northern Kosovo.
Ten further Americans and an Austrian were injured in the violence in the Kosovo town of Kosovska Mitrovica.
"A reckless attack on a group of correctional officers left us in shock and dismay," the UN police chief in Kosovo Stefan Feller told a news conference here: "This is a sad day for UN peacekeeping." More than 3,000 police from various countries are second to the UN mission (UNMIK) here to maintain law and order in the UN-administered province.
Initial reports Saturday said the clash was sparked off by a quarrel over the conflict in Iraq, UN sources requesting anonymity said.
