Women singers have been banned from appearing on television in the eastern Afghan province of Nangarhar after their performances were branded un-Islamic, an official said Sunday.
"We were told that women singers should not appear on Nangarhar TV anymore," the provincial television broadcasting director, Zubair Khaksar told AFP.
"In the last two years we always had women news presenters and women songs on television but now we have been told it is un-Islamic," he added.
The government's Information and Culture ministry has stood by moves to show women singers on television, although the western province of Herat has also banned their appearance.
