Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee's campaign manager offered Sunday to step down two days before the start of national elections after being charged over a stampede that killed 22 women and children.
"I am very sorry for the stampede," Lalji Tandon told reporters in the northern city of Lucknow, where he has run Vajpayee's re-election campaign for his parliament seat.
"The fact that it has made the prime minister very unhappy has disturbed me to the extent that I am stepping down as the election convenor of the prime minister's campaigning committee," he said.
There was no immediate word on whether the 79-year-old premier would accept the resignation.
Tandon said he will continue to work in other capacity for the premier's Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which opinion polls give an edge in the election that runs from Tuesday to May 10.
