The Punjab Labour Department on the special directive of chief minister is spending a huge amount of over Rs 1 billion on specialised medical treatment of its secured workers across the province.
Provincial Commissioner, Punjab Employees Social Security Institution (PESSI) Kazi Afaq Hussain told APP here on Sunday that PESSI had spent Rs 1.1 billion last year on the medical treatment of 0.5 million secured workers and 3.6 million on their dependants.
He said during current fiscal year, an amount of over Rs one billion has already been earmarked for providing free medical cover to all entitled workers and their families.
He said PESSI is maintaining a chain of 8 major hospitals, 6 mini hospitals, 300 dispensaries and 31 injury treatment centres.
Kazi said Rs 70.59 million cash benefit was given to workers during the last year while the same allocation has been increased for current monetary year.
He said, PESSI, on the direction of Labour Minister Punjab Syed Akhtar Hussain Rizvi, has extended the expensive facility of specialised medical treatment of bone marrow transplant to workers at Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology, (AFIC) Rawalpindi.
He said chief minister desired that all poor workers must be provided free of cost specialised medical treatment on priority.
Commissioner said best private medical centres equipped with latest medical gadgets have been enlisted on the panel of Social Security Hospital for proper laser treatment to workers in city.
He said the patients are being successfully treated for renal transplant at Social Security Hospital here.
He said the facilities of laboratory have been provided in all the dispensaries and Injury Treatment Centres throughout the province.
He said that 100-bed hospitals one each at Sialkot and Shahdara have been established to provide the facility of medical treatment to workers at their doorsteps while Social Security Hospital, Multan has been upgraded from 50-beds to 100-beds.
