Speakers at different functions held in connection with 'World Day for Safety and Health' observed here on Wednesday like other parts of Asia Pacific, have called for promoting the safety culture at the workplace.
The day was observed under the auspices of International Labour Organisation (ILO) throughout Asia Pacific in a bid to pay homage to those killed and injured earning their living and to promote the spirit of safety culture.
It may be mentioned that over 2.5 million workers died every year throughout the world while working at the work place.
The ratio of these deaths is high in poor and developing countries mainly on account of not adopting safety measures while working.
To mark the day, All Pakistan Federation of Trade Unions organised a function in which speakers including Amin Rathore, Osama Tariq, Khushi Muhammad Khokhar, Mian Saleem and others urged the government to ensure provision of safety equipment and conducive.
They said it was responsibility of the employers as well as government to provide health facilities to its employees.
They also demanded compulsory insurance for drivers and conductors associated with transport sector.
They also urged the government to ensure strict implementation of labour laws pertaining to safety of workers. They also demanded constitution of national safety and health council.
Speaking on the occasion, representative of ILO in Pakistan, Dr Basharat Ahmed said that ILO is impressing upon governments in 174 countries to ensure strict implementation of safety and labour laws for safety and good health of workers.
One-minute silence was also observed on the occasion in memory of those who died at work.
