The performance of Lakhra Coal Development Company was reviewed in detail on Wednesday at its Board of Directors meeting held under the chairmanship of Sindh Minerals Minister Ali Mohammed Usman Malkani.
The minister expressed satisfaction over the company's performance and the tasks in hand.
The meeting considered the coal extraction agreement in detail, and set up a four-member committee, which would examine various provisions of the agreement, and submit the same before the Board at its next meeting for finalisation.
The Lakhra Coal Development Company Managing Director Saleem Qureshi told the Board the foremost purpose of the company is to supply coal from the Lakhra fields for thermal power plant which will have a daily consumption of 8,000 tonnes.
He said only Lakhra coal is suitable for the plant and the power to be generated will be much cheaper as it costs 70 paisa per unit.
The meeting was informed that efforts are being made for semi-technical mines in Lakhra so that coal production could be further increased.
He said a foreign company has shown interest in setting up a coal cleaning plant with a capacity of 0.5 million tonnes, adding the offer is under consideration of the Lakhra Coal Development Company.
He pointed out that if an agreement becomes effective, it would require semi-mechanised mines.

Khalid Khokhar, Director-General Rasheed Malik, Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation, Quetta, Director General Mohammed Iqbal Awan, Financial Advisor, Ministry of Petroleum, Engineer Wapda Lahore, Haseeb Ahmed, Engineer Wapda Jamshoro, Abu Adil, Sindh Minerals Secretary Israr Shaikh, and Lakhra Coal Development Company Managing Director Saleem Qureshi.
