Pakistan Crop Protection Association (PCPA) has urged President and Prime Minister of Pakistan to intervene to protect the local pesticide industry.
In a letter to them, Ijaz Ahmad Chaudhry, Central Chairman PCPA demanded of the government to provide protection to the local pesticide industry.
He urged the government to bring rate of duty at the level of five percent on spraying machinery.
He asked the government to announce incentive package for the local pesticide industry in the forthcoming budget. He said that Pakistan would become a market of imported pesticides, hence protection of local pesticide industry is a must.
He said it is unfortunate that annual sale of agriculture pesticides has crossed the mark of Rs 15 billion but Pakistan has not been able to manufacture even one litre of pesticide.
He said that manufacturing of high quality spraying machines is one of the biggest problems being faced by the growers of Pakistan, as use of substandard spraying machines adversely affect the impact of pesticide.
There are some international standards regarding the performance of spraying machines, according to which a good spraying machine must develop a certain pressure for achieving the maximum impact of pesticide, he added.
At present, a large number of local farmers are using substandard spraying machines.
He said that the government should give permission for the import of high quality spraying machines on minimum duty level.
He said that imposition of general sales tax (GST) has increased the prices of pesticide manifold.
