The federal government has approved Rs 3.5 billion Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) police reorganisation plan.
Interior Minister, Syed Faisal Saleh Hayat announced this while addressing the Rescue 15 Awards distribution ceremony here on Wednesday.
The major portion of the approved budget (Rs 1.30 billion) has been earmarked for the construction of barracks to provide accommodation facilities to police force, he added.
However, the minister directed the concerned police authorities to immediately prepare a construction plan to meet the residential requirements of the Islamabad police.
Faisal said that rest of the funds would be spent on building of infrastructure of new police stations in the federal capital.
To overcome the shortage of police staff, ICT police will start fresh recruitment soon, he said.
It is to be mentioned here that the existing strength of ICT police is 7,206, of which 4,217 has been deployed on Prime Minister and President security duties besides guarding the foreign missions.
It means that more than 61 percent police in the federal capital was not involved in policing, which is creating problems. The restricting package approved by the Prime Minister Jamali would equip the Islamabad police with latest state of the art investigation technology with the provision of vehicles for active policing, he added.
Faisal Hayat admitted that ICT police facing many challenges due to financial constraints, but it would be overcome shortly.
The capital police, he said is planning to introduce two systems in twin cities to bring down the crime rate. For this purpose vehicle identification system is being introduced at the main entry points of Islamabad that would be monitored through satellite, he said adding security cameras will also be installed for surveillance to reduce the chances of terrorism and traffic rules violations.
Talking to journalists after concluding the ceremony, interior minister while responding to a question said PML-N exiled president Mian Shahbaz Sharif would not be deported to any other country. However, he categorically said that strict legal action to be taken against him if he violated 10-year agreement between Sharif family and the then government.
About the President Musharraf's role in future politics, Faisal denied that PPP-Patriot had offered any key position in his party. Replying to a query, the minister said government of Pakistan has so far not received any request from the United Nations for sending peacekeeping force to Iraq.
To initiate reforms in Fata, federal government has announced large-scale development programmes in Wana (South Waziristan Agency), he said.
Earlier, Inspector General Islamabad Police Fayyaz Khan Toru said that Rescue 15 has set a new service-delivery trend for promoting healthy policing. Rescue 15 was established in 2000 and so far received around two million calls from all walks of life for assistance, he added.
He said that Islamabad police would be made model force and public friendly.
SSP Islamabad, Shahid Nadeem Baloch also spoke on the occasion.
