The US government is reviewing whether to keep paying Ahmad Chalabi's political party $340,000 a month for intelligence, a clear sign of how much the former Iraqi exile's star has dimmed in Washington.
Bush administration officials said on Friday the Pentagon's payments for intelligence gathered by Chalabi's associates are the subject of a high-level, US inter-agency review.
Chalabi has repeatedly angered US officials and lawmakers, who question the value of his intelligence information.
While he has long had critics within the State Department and the Central Intelligence Agency, some US officials said Chalabi's support at the Pentagon also appears to be waning.
"He doesn't enjoy anywhere near widespread support across the administration, and his support in places where you might expect it to remain has fallen off sharply," said an official who asked not to be named.
