May day was observed here on Saturday to pay homage to the martyrs of Chicago who laid down their lives for better working conditions.
More than a dozen rallies were organised by the political parties like PPP, PML-N, PML-Q, Communist Party of Pakistan Trade Union Federation, Labour Rights Committee, United Labour Federation, Hydro power, and All Pakistan Jute & Textile Workers Union while a number of seminars were also held to highlight the problems confronted by the workers.
A rally was taken out from Chowk Dera Adda under the leadership of Liaquat Dogar, MNA, Khurshid Ahmed Khan, Yasmin Khakwani, Comrade Yamin, Tariq Raza Khan which terminated at Chowk Nawan Shehr.
A big rally was jointly organised by PPP, Pakistan Seraiki Party (PSP), Pakistan Communist Party, Mazdoor Kissan Communist Party, and Human Rights Commission from Chowk Ghanta Ghar and terminated at Chowk Nawan Shehr which was led by Taj Muhammad Langah, Habibullah Shakir, Irfan Haider Shamsi, Mehfooz Khan Shujaat, Rashid Rehman and Malik Mukhtar Ahmed Awan.
Langah said that all democratic, nationalist and human rights parties and organisations should forge unity for practical struggle to safeguard the workers rights.
He said that basic rights of Seraiki people are being usurped by the ruling class. Habibullah Shakir said that Bhutto had organised his party based on the politics of industrial workers, farmers and downtrodden people. He said that PPP on coming into power would reinstate all workers who were being retrenched in the guise of privatisation, downsizing and right sizing.
He said that the present regime is openly violating the ILO charter, and its labour laws were repugnant to the basic human rights.
He demanded cancellation of IRO-2002, removal from service act, formation of new labour policies.
